We’re putting Grand Tactician front and centre because at the moment we feel it’s going to become one of the most important ACW releases in recent times, although other recent games like Victory and Glory below were also pretty solid. Grand Tactician is proving to be quite ambitious in what it wants to do, and of Mr. Keppelmuller manages to pull it off then this game will easily take the crown.
As things stand though, there’s some big caveats you should be aware of. It’s in Early Access, for starters, which essentially means this is a beta - warts and all. You can read our hands-on impressions that Bill did. He was definitely blown away and while he’s always tended to focus on positives over negatives he does mention problems ranging from dodgy AI behaviour to off casualty figures. Read around and you’ll see other people struggling with other rough edges this game still has. With any luck these will all be ironed out over time, but know that even though this game sits at the top of our ACW list, it’s not yet in the state it needs to be in to earn that spot. One of Lock’n Load’s three digital releases in 2020, Victory & Glory’s American Civil War outing is an excellent board-game style experience featuring an area-control style strategy layer, card mechanics and a tactical battle interface. You can play out the entire conflict as either the Union or the Confederacy in a campaign that’s highly replayable. Naval warfare is highly abstracted, but the land war is well represented. Apart from some documentation issues around concepts like supply and some bugs, this is actually a pretty decent ACW strategy game and an excellent showing from Lock’n Load. Ultimate General: Civil War is a wonderful follow-up to Game-Labs LLC’s already wonderful Ultimate General: Gettysburg. Civil War puts the player in command of either Confederate or Union armies throughout the entirety of the war, allowing the player to build their army composition, from unit size to weaponry of individual units. The title brings Total War-style tactics (the lead on this game did make several mods for Total War Xfire for mac download. games) to the well-known battlefields of Antietam and Gettysburg, as well as battles with less coverage in games, such as Gaines’ Mill and Chickamauga.
The ability to follow individual brigades and their officers throughout the war is one I learned to miss after playing this game. Seeing a unit you created during the first year of the war get utterly dissolved by enemy canister rounds is heartbreaking, but following an officer’s career path from lowly Captain to Major General brings pride I rarely get from playing games. It’s easy to connect with your army on a personal level, as you can name each unit in addition to being able to manage their training and outfitting.Gettysburg: The Tide Turns

Speaking of Gettysburg, it’s impossible to list off the best American Civil War games without mentioning a game about Gettysburg at least once. Gettysburg marked the high-water mark of the Confederacy during the war, and The Tide Turns is a beautiful display of… well, how the tide turned. The map is wonderful, drawing inspiration from old Engineer Corps maps, with unit markers distinctly popping out against the backdrop.
What makes The Tide Turns such an interesting game is the turn system. Units have their turn order decided by the random drawing of “lots” from the total amount of units on the field. This leads to an uncertainty of combat that is not present in IGOUGO or WEGO type games, but is certainly more representative of the chaos of Gettysburg.Civil War: 1863

HexWar’s charming Civil War: 186x series made the jump to PC from Android and iOS, bringing what our reviewer Jeff Renaud called a “quick hit” wargame. It’s easy to jump into a scenario pulled from the many different battles of 1863 (or any of the other years of the war, there are companion games featuring all of them!), with combat frequently beginning on the first turn. A single scenario can take less than an hour, but the brevity of the games can’t be mistaken for easiness. The Scourge of War series feature some of the most realistic depictions of generalship of the 19th century, and Chancellorsville is no exception. The player can take command of different units within either the Union or Confederate forces; from commanding a lone Brigade to commanding the entire army. Orders given and received are a nice touch, as virtual couriers will arrive with and send out letters you can pen yourself. Units can be directed to form into specific formations and have several different movement options, including instructions to travel via road and to form into a certain formation type upon arrival. These options are necessary to success, as the AI may have read ahead in the history book, and will prove to be a fierce opponent.

Brother against Brother has a great nostalgic feel to it. The sprites and the maps are reminiscent of wargames a generation or two ago, but the game packs several unique features that make it worth mentioning. The first is the inclusion of Wilson’s Creek, a battle in the Western Theatre of the war. Any battle not on the east coast is normally glossed over, so kudos to Western Civilization Software for broadening our collective horizons.
The title also packs an “active ability” feature that generals can use on their units to encourage them to fight harder, à la the more recent Total War offerings. This coupled with a novel movement system, where units can sometimes refuse to move in a representation of orders being jumbled and lost, brings a refreshing yet familiar take on some less covered battles of the war.The Operational Art of War 4

Before you all storm to the comments to yell at us for TOAW4 not being an American Civil War game, we know the whole game is not about the American Civil War. War of Rights is an Early Access FPS that looks quite impressive so far. 150 players can duke it out on the battlefield, which so far includes Antietam and Harper’s Ferry. The gameplay looks and feels solid, like a cross of Mount & Blade and Holdfast’s combat style, while bringing a more realistic visual fidelity to the fight. A chain-of-command system is currently under development, so far with higher ranking officers passing down orders to their subordinates, who can in turn order their men to follow their lead. The game is primarily multiplayer, so the experience does depend on other players, but players do tend to actually work together. John Tiller Software did a series called Civil War Battles, which cover specific battles and campaigns during the American Civil War. They’re old-school hex-and-counter affairs, but they’re currently being remastered by Wargame Design Studio with new graphics and engines updates. We’re looking into these now and as we evaluate them, we’ll add them to the main list. We’ve put this here though so that you’re aware they also exist, and are considered pretty good ACW war games for what they are.
As was pointed out in the comments, we’d also be remiss not to mention Sid Meier’sGettysburg! & Antietam! games from the late 90’s. Gettysburg! especially was considered one of the best strategy/war games of the time, and is a bench mark for many ACW and Gettysburg-themed games that have come out in the decades since. We haven’t listed it below, mainly because they are fairly old now and there’s no official support for them although you can find a digital copy via Abandonware websites. Ultimate General: Civil War is a wonderful follow-up to Game-Labs LLC’s already wonderful Ultimate General: Gettysburg. Civil War puts the player in command of either Confederate or Union armies throughout the entirety of the war, allowing the player to build their army composition, from unit size to weaponry of individual units. The title brings Total War-style tactics (the lead on this game did make several mods for Total War Xfire for mac download. games) to the well-known battlefields of Antietam and Gettysburg, as well as battles with less coverage in games, such as Gaines’ Mill and Chickamauga.
The ability to follow individual brigades and their officers throughout the war is one I learned to miss after playing this game. Seeing a unit you created during the first year of the war get utterly dissolved by enemy canister rounds is heartbreaking, but following an officer’s career path from lowly Captain to Major General brings pride I rarely get from playing games. It’s easy to connect with your army on a personal level, as you can name each unit in addition to being able to manage their training and outfitting.Gettysburg: The Tide Turns

Speaking of Gettysburg, it’s impossible to list off the best American Civil War games without mentioning a game about Gettysburg at least once. Gettysburg marked the high-water mark of the Confederacy during the war, and The Tide Turns is a beautiful display of… well, how the tide turned. The map is wonderful, drawing inspiration from old Engineer Corps maps, with unit markers distinctly popping out against the backdrop.
What makes The Tide Turns such an interesting game is the turn system. Units have their turn order decided by the random drawing of “lots” from the total amount of units on the field. This leads to an uncertainty of combat that is not present in IGOUGO or WEGO type games, but is certainly more representative of the chaos of Gettysburg.Civil War: 1863

HexWar’s charming Civil War: 186x series made the jump to PC from Android and iOS, bringing what our reviewer Jeff Renaud called a “quick hit” wargame. It’s easy to jump into a scenario pulled from the many different battles of 1863 (or any of the other years of the war, there are companion games featuring all of them!), with combat frequently beginning on the first turn. A single scenario can take less than an hour, but the brevity of the games can’t be mistaken for easiness. The Scourge of War series feature some of the most realistic depictions of generalship of the 19th century, and Chancellorsville is no exception. The player can take command of different units within either the Union or Confederate forces; from commanding a lone Brigade to commanding the entire army. Orders given and received are a nice touch, as virtual couriers will arrive with and send out letters you can pen yourself. Units can be directed to form into specific formations and have several different movement options, including instructions to travel via road and to form into a certain formation type upon arrival. These options are necessary to success, as the AI may have read ahead in the history book, and will prove to be a fierce opponent.
Chancellorsville was an important prelude to Gettysburg, but is not as frequently covered as the latter. However, if you are looking to get your fix of Chamberlains and Picketts, you may also be interested in Scourge of War: Gettysburg.Brother against Brother

Brother against Brother has a great nostalgic feel to it. The sprites and the maps are reminiscent of wargames a generation or two ago, but the game packs several unique features that make it worth mentioning. The first is the inclusion of Wilson’s Creek, a battle in the Western Theatre of the war. Any battle not on the east coast is normally glossed over, so kudos to Western Civilization Software for broadening our collective horizons.
The title also packs an “active ability” feature that generals can use on their units to encourage them to fight harder, à la the more recent Total War offerings. This coupled with a novel movement system, where units can sometimes refuse to move in a representation of orders being jumbled and lost, brings a refreshing yet familiar take on some less covered battles of the war.The Operational Art of War 4

War of Rights is an Early Access FPS that looks quite impressive so far. 150 players can duke it out on the battlefield, which so far includes Antietam and Harper’s Ferry. The gameplay looks and feels solid, like a cross of Mount & Blade and Holdfast’s combat style, while bringing a more realistic visual fidelity to the fight. A chain-of-command system is currently under development, so far with higher ranking officers passing down orders to their subordinates, who can in turn order their men to follow their lead. The game is primarily multiplayer, so the experience does depend on other players, but players do tend to actually work together. John Tiller Software did a series called Civil War Battles, which cover specific battles and campaigns during the American Civil War. They’re old-school hex-and-counter affairs, but they’re currently being remastered by Wargame Design Studio with new graphics and engines updates. We’re looking into these now and as we evaluate them, we’ll add them to the main list. We’ve put this here though so that you’re aware they also exist, and are considered pretty good ACW war games for what they are.
As was pointed out in the comments, we’d also be remiss not to mention Sid Meier’sGettysburg! & Antietam! games from the late 90’s. Gettysburg! especially was considered one of the best strategy/war games of the time, and is a bench mark for many ACW and Gettysburg-themed games that have come out in the decades since. We haven’t listed it below, mainly because they are fairly old now and there’s no official support for them although you can find a digital copy via Abandonware websites. If you’re interested in exploring one of the gold standards of digital ACW wargames, you’ll want to check it out.

Xfire, Inc. was founded in 2002 by Dennis ’Thresh’ Fong, Mike Cassidy, Max Woon, and David Lawee.[4] The company was formerly known as Ultimate Arena, but changed its name to Xfire when its desktop client Xfire became more popular and successful than its gaming website.[5] The first version of the Xfire desktop client was code-named Scoville,[6] which was first developed in 2003 by Garrett Blythe, Chris Kirmse, Mike Judge, and others.
On April 25, 2006, Xfire was acquired by Viacom in a US $102 million deal.[7][8]

On May 7, 2007, Xfire announced that they had reached 7 million registered users.[11] Shortly after, on June 13, 2007, co-founder and former CEO Mike Cassidy departed the company to work for venture capital firm Benchmark Capital.[12] Adam Boyden, Vice President of Business Development & Marketing, was assigned to take his place and manage the company for a temporary period.
On August 2, 2010, Xfire was acquired by Titan Gaming.[13] At 22:16 Greenwich Mean Time, the following message was broadcast to Xfire users:

Yahoo! filed a lawsuit against Xfire, Inc. on January 28, 2005, claiming that Xfire has infringed Yahoo!’s U.S. patent No. 6,699,125 for a ’Game server for use in connection with a messenger server’. Xfire, Inc. filed a countersuit against Yahoo! on March 10, 2005, which was eventually disqualified by the judge. There has been a settlement between the companies as of January 31, 2006. Xfire had many features, the majority of which can only be used while in-game.
Xfire featured the ability to detect the video game a particular user is running. By analyzing running processes, Xfire can detect active games and send that information to Xfire clients with the current player as a friend. For many games, it can also detect which server users are playing on, the level which is running, and ping times. Using these features, users were also able to see what games their friends are playing, and to join any friends who are currently in-game by having Xfire launch the game and join the friend’s server automatically. Xfire logs what games users are playing, how many hours they have played them, and saves other information (such as scores) from game servers. This information can be converted into a PNGimage by the server via PHP for every user to use as a signature.
Xfire allowed players to take screenshots in-game and save them to a specified folder, though this only works with games that have Xfire in-game support. Users can select and caption any screenshots they wish to upload and share on their Xfire profile page. Xfire also had the ability to record video in-game, though this can have a significant impact on game performance and recording quality if one has a low-performance system, causing the frame rate to slow dramatically.[18] However, this is typically true of all video recording during gaming, and not unique to Xfire.
To communicate with other users in-game, Xfire users may send and receive instant messages from inside a game in fullscreen mode, regardless of the games the sender or recipient are in. This eliminates the need to minimize the game window. On August 2005, Xfire updated to version 1.43, which added a betavoice chat feature using Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology to the application called ’Xfire Pro-Voice’. Until early 2009, if voice chat was being used in a chat room, users had to host the voice chat, causing quality problems and lag due to some users have better system capabilities than others. Xfire hosted the voice chat sessions to resolve quality problems.[19] On May 4, 2009, a built-in alpha AOL Instant Messenger and Windows Live Messenger plugin was released in 1.108. As of May 4, 2009, it only supported chatting, and none of AIM’s other features.[20] Since December 1, 2009, users could access their Twitter accounts through Xfire, allowing players to view updates posted by other users, as well as post their own. The Xfire game software development kit was released with version 1.56 in May 2006. It offered game developers an interface to expose some of the game data to the Xfire application, though this feature is not compatible with all games.
On December 16, 2011, Xfire added a feature to allow its users to capture in-game video and upload it to YouTube.[21] This feature is similar to other popular in-game video recording software products, but allowed users to record videos up to 10 minutes in length for free.
In version 1.63, Xfire released a beta clan system that allows users to create clans or guilds on the Xfire website. Xfire added a video streaming feature in version 1.97. To view a broadcast, a web browser plugin was required, supporting only Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox. In version 1.113, released on August 17, 2009, the broadcast system was changed to allow a plugin-less, Flash-based view compatible with any Flash-enabled browser. Xfire (pronounced ’X-Fire’[1]) was a proprietary freewareinstant messaging service for gamers that also served as a game server browser with various other features. It was available for Microsoft Windows.
DSP PRO iPhone app, is the user control center for the XFIRE AUDIO XFR DSP PRO, Digital Sound Processor. The app uses bluetooth to connect with the DSP and gives you the ability to choose which. Xfire includes a substantive download system that users can use to download game updates, Xfire client updates, and other things. Most of those are unique to Windows, and would serve no purpose for Mac users. I am not aware of any mechanism for users to submit their own files, so adding Mac files is probably not possible. It is the first Xfire client for Mac OS X. Several Xfire clients were available for different platforms: MacFire: An open-source implementation for of the Xfire network protocol for Mac OS X. Xfire was originally developed by Ultimate Arena based in Menlo Park, California. As of January 3, 2014, it had over 24 million registered users.[2]
Xfire’s Livestream (formerly known as Mogulus) allowed users to broadcast live video streams of their current game to an audience. The Xfire website also maintained a ’Top Ten’ games list, ranking games by the number of hours Xfire users spend playing each game every day. World of Warcraft has been the most played game for many years, but was since surpassed by League of Legends on June 20, 2011.
Xfire hosts events every month, which can include debates, game tournaments, machinima contests, and chat sessions with Xfire or game developers.
Xfire’s web based social media was discontinued on June 12, 2015, and the messaging client was shut down on June 27, 2015.[3]

On May 7, 2007, Xfire announced that they had reached 7 million registered users.[11] Shortly after, on June 13, 2007, co-founder and former CEO Mike Cassidy departed the company to work for venture capital firm Benchmark Capital.[12] Adam Boyden, Vice President of Business Development & Marketing, was assigned to take his place and manage the company for a temporary period.
On August 2, 2010, Xfire was acquired by Titan Gaming.[13] At 22:16 Greenwich Mean Time, the following message was broadcast to Xfire users:
Xfire was bought by new owners today. Most of the team that has built Xfire over the last six years is leaving. We enjoyed working for you for the last 127 releases and wish we could stay to create the next 127. Good bye, good luck, and game on.

Publishing to Azure in Visual Studio Community for Mac is working perfectly for me (no need to install the Professional version). However, I also have issues with that. Visual Studio for Mac now includes support for generating an API client from an OpenAPI or gRPC service. This includes the ability to generate the client from a local file or URL, manage service references, and regenerate the client code if the service changes.
To add add a new reference to an OpenAPI or gRPC service, right-click on the Connected Services node in the Solution pad and select Open Service Gallery.
After opening the Connected Services Gallery, you have the option to add either an OpenAPI or gRPC reference.
Clicking on either of the options launches a prompt which allows you to enter the service reference, either by file path or URL.
When generating a gRPC client, you can also select whether to generate the following client class types:
*Client
*Server
*Client and Server
*Messages Only (used to generate strongly typed classes based on message properties, with no generated server or client code)
When generating an OpenAPI client, you can specify the namespace and additional options which are passed through to the code generator.Visual Studio Community 2019
Code generation is based on the dotnet-grpc and dotnet-openapi command-line tools.
After generating a service reference, you can view and modify it in the Connected Services Gallery as shown below.

When editing C# classes containing unit tests, developers can now right-click within the body of a test class or method to access options for running and debugging tests.

Visual Studio for Mac now includes support for generating an API client from an OpenAPI or gRPC service. This includes the ability to generate the client from a local file or URL, manage service references, and regenerate the client code if the service changes.
To add add a new reference to an OpenAPI or gRPC service, right-click on the Connected Services node in the Solution pad and select Open Service Gallery.
After opening the Connected Services Gallery, you have the option to add either an OpenAPI or gRPC reference.
Clicking on either of the options launches a prompt which allows you to enter the service reference, either by file path or URL.
When generating a gRPC client, you can also select whether to generate the following client class types:
*Client
*Server
*Client and Server
*Messages Only (used to generate strongly typed classes based on message properties, with no generated server or client code)
When generating an OpenAPI client, you can specify the namespace and additional options which are passed through to the code generator.Visual Studio Community 2019
Code generation is based on the dotnet-grpc and dotnet-openapi command-line tools.
After generating a service reference, you can view and modify it in the Connected Services Gallery as shown below.
